Do you feel like your hands are drying out from all of the extra washing you’ve been doing lately? Us too.
Dry hands are a natural side effect of frequent washing, but there are things you can do to help care for your skin and keep it from becoming too chapped (While continuing to wash your hands frequently).
How to care for dry hands:
- Keep washing your hands, but avoid too thick of a lather. Apply enough soap to cover the hands, and wash for the recommended 20 seconds, but don’t apply so much soap that you create a thick layer of soapy bubbles. This strips away the skin’s natural oils along with the dirt and bacteria that collect on the hand.
- Wash your hands with warm, rather than hot, water. Hot water also plays a part in over-drying the skin.
- Pat your hands dry. Rather than harshly rubbing your hands with a towel after washing, pat your hands dry to avoid any unnecessary irritation to your skin.
- Apply hand cream or moisturizer after washing your hands. Something we often forget to do after washing our hands is to re-moisturize. Keep a bottle of hand cream or moisturizer, and carry an extra one with you when you go out so that you can combat dryness immediately after washing.
- Avoid scented hand creams and moisturizers. Often, scented moisturizes further aggravate chapped, sensitive skin. Try an unscented moisturizer instead.
