Microneedling-What You Need To Know

If you struggle with skin concerns such as uneven skin tone or age spots, microneedling might be right for you. This minimally invasive procedure can restore elasticity to the skin and smooth the appearance of scars, dark spots, or stretch marks. Microneedling is an excellent introductory skin procedure since it doesn’t require a lengthy recovery time, but it is also a perfect pairing with other esthetic procedures, like Botox. Microneedling is primarily used on the face, but it can also be used on the thighs or abdomen to address stretch marks. As a result, many patients are good candidates for microneedling, and the finished results can rival more invasive procedures.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of blemishes. The treatment uses tiny needles to prick the skin and cause it to generate new collagen and skin tissue, creating smoother and more toned skin. It is a minimally invasive procedure; patients report a 51%-60% improvement in scar visibility.

Who will benefit from microneedling?

There are many positive benefits from undergoing this procedure, including:

  • Improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduce the appearance of acne scars
  • Even out skin tone and reduce redness
  • Lighten hyperpigmentation and sun spots
  • Minimize the appearance of pores
  • Firm and smooth the surface of the skin
  • Improve brightness of skin
  • Reduce the appearance of broken capillaries
  • And of course, looking and feeling your best!

Microneedling can treat various skin conditions that cause depression in the skin. Microneedling is also ideal for patients with darker-toned skin who are wary of choosing heat-based treatments like laser. It is also typically less expensive per treatment than laser treatments. Consult your aesthetic provider to determine if the subtle yet significant results are right for you. It’s important to note that patients who are current/recent Accutane users, undergoing skin radiation, pregnant, or with a history of poor wound healing would not be good candidates for this procedure.

What happens during and after the procedure?

Every patient interested in microneedling should begin by scheduling a free consultation at Renew Medical Spa. Our knowledgeable staff will begin by assessing your concerns and understanding your goals. Our providers may suggest alternate treatments if microneedling isn’t right for you.

Your provider will apply a topical anesthetic (a skin-numbing cream) to the treatment area during your procedure. Skin-numbing creams are medications that function as a local anesthetic, reducing sensitivity to pain in their applied areas. These creams work by blocking nerve signals in the body. Then, the provider will use a medical device to make tiny pinpricks evenly through the skin. Once complete, your provider will apply a growth solution to the area to stimulate tissue rejuvenation. Microneedling provides fantastic benefits, but there are important instructions for aftercare that you will need to follow to achieve optimal results. You will need to avoid sun exposure for 2-3 weeks before and after your treatment. We also recommend using a quality SPF 50 sun protectant while your skin is healing. Patients may feel like they have a mild sunburn while healing, and the skin may feel tighter than usual.

Patients can expect improvement in skin tone, texture, and pore size within just one week of a single treatment. However, we recommend doing 3-6 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart, for best results.

Is Microneedling safe?

Like any procedure, microneedling has risks. However, our providers at Renew Medical Spa are highly trained so that you can feel confident in their attention to detail and understanding of the procedure. The FDA notes that there are three microneedling devices: a dermal roller (needles rolled over the skin), a stamp-type section of needles, and a pen-shaped device. The FDA has cleared most pen-shaped devices as medical-grade, emphasizing that patients should always choose an appropriately trained and experienced healthcare provider. Please note that there are many at-home kits and tools to try microneedling on your own. These kits are not FDA-approved and should be avoided for safety and to lower your risk of infection. It is best to have microneedling done under the supervision of an appropriately trained provider.
