Things to Know Before Your Kybella® Treatment

Can you think of an instance when you forgot to prepare for an appointment or a test? Usually, when we don’t prepare or don’t have all of the information, it can create a more chaotic or unpredictable outcome than we intended. Knowing what to expect or prepare for is essential when undergoing any medical procedure but in the world of esthetic procedures, it can also help achieve more successful results. For instance, after many esthetic procedures, it’s important to stay out of the sun/wear protective sunscreen. Knowing this integral instruction can help prevent complications and even help patients plan out their summer plans more easily. That’s why we have put together a list of things you will want to know before choosing a Kybella® procedure. When you book with Renew Medical Spa, you can feel confident that your provider will give you clear and careful instructions, but these are things you can consider beforehand:

What is a Kybella® Treatment?

Submental fullness (also known as a double chin) can be challenging for many patients. Having a double chin can make you appear heavier or older than you actually are and despite your best efforts, it may not be disappearing. This can be due to age, weight gain, or genetics, but it can impact your confidence. In 2014, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery found that 68% of the people surveyed reported that their submental fullness bothered them. Kybella® is an excellent solution. Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable that destroys the fat cells in the area beneath your chin. The active ingredient in this treatment is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Kybella® destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat (Source). One of the best benefits of this minimally-invasive procedure is that once you have achieved maximum results (typically 2-4 treatments), you should not have to return for more.

What happens during my Kybella® Treatment?

Before you book your upcoming procedure, you’ll first have a complimentary consultation from the caring staff at Renew Medical Spa. They offer this personalized skin analysis to all patients, and it’s designed to help you learn more about what your skin needs and create personal skincare goals. During this consultation, you’ll receive VISIA skin imaging (measures skin health and appearance), which is quick and painless. Then, our licensed skincare provider will review your results and develop a personalized plan with you. You’ll also receive information about pricing and flexible payment options.

If your skincare provider feels Kybella® is right for you, our staff will help you schedule your procedure. During the treatment, your provider will begin by marking the injection sites on the submental (under the chin) area. You may receive topical analgesia or ice to help minimize discomfort. Then, a series of injections are placed according to the marked diagram on your skin. The process typically takes approximately 15-30 minutes, and is usually well-tolerated. After your treatment is complete, ice will be applied to reduce the swelling and redness. You may have mild swelling and bruising in the area in the days following the procedure, so it’s important to be patient with the recovery process.

Who is an ideal candidate for Kybella®?

Because this is a minimally invasive procedure, many patients are good candidates. However, it’s still important to ask questions of your provider about whether it’s right for you. People looking forward to significant events may want to schedule their procedure accordingly because you can have increased swelling in the treatment area for the days following the treatment. Most patients find that after three days, these side effects subside. This procedure is also best for people who know that they will need to maintain a healthy lifestyle after they achieve maximum results, as it will not prevent future changes from weight gain in your submental area. This procedure is not recommended for:

  • Patients who have current or past dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
  • Patients who have blood or clotting disorders and are on anticoagulants
  • Patients who have had a previous submental treatment

How do I know if I can afford Kybella®?

The injected treatment comes in vials, and the number of vials used varies per patient. This is because every treatment area may be different in terms of severity or size. If you are wondering whether you can afford Kybella®, we would be happy to share our flexible payment plans. We believe that access to confidence-building skincare should be accessible and simple to attain, so we have plenty of options available.
