What to Expect: Forever Young® BBL (BroadBand Phototherapy)

In just thirty minutes, you can grab a coffee, eat lunch, or return a few emails. Thirty minutes is a short amount of time, but when it comes to Forever Young® BBL, this can be enough time to begin reversing your dark spots, sun spots, or hyperpigmentation.  This procedure can generate powerful changes in the appearance of your skin and has minimal downtime and recovery. Are you considering BroadBand Phototherapy? At Renew Medical Spa, we offer customized skincare treatments that are based on real results.  Read on to find out more about what you can expect with this unique and effective treatment:

What is BroadBand Phototherapy (BBL)?

Many patients who begin researching BBL believe it is laser therapy, but it is actually using pulsed light rays to target areas where the signs of aging or sun damage have appeared. While lasers use light with a single wavelength, BroadBand uses a spectrum of light rays.  You may see it referred to as “intense pulsed light therapy (IPL)” or “phototherapy.” The Forever Young® BBL(Broadband Light Therapy) uses light energy to improve tone and texture in the skin and to treat pigment-related concerns, such as dark spots, sun spots, freckles, or melasma. During BroadBand light therapy, the light energy is delivered to the skin with a handheld device. This heats up the layers of the skin and is absorbed into the area being targeted.  The process stimulates the skin cells to begin regenerating and making new collagen, which tightens and smooths the skin. Lastly, the coloring in your natural skin tone blends together as a result of the therapy, leaving you with younger-looking, smoother, and more even skin texture in the affected area. The most important thing to remember about the way that BBL works is that it targets the skin on the fundamental level, and stimulates the skin’s own important work of creating collagen.

Who is a good candidate for BroadBand Phototherapy?

Because these treatments are all brief and have minimal recovery time, they are ideal for our patients with busy lifestyles and schedules. However, it’s important to understand that this specific type of therapy is not necessarily a one-time treatment. Patients who see the best results return for maintenance, and we may recommend that patients have 2-4 treatments per year.

BBL is recommended for patients who are dealing with challenges related to hyperpigmentation, but it can also be a great choice for improving the appearance of small facial veins, port wine stains, or redness/flushing. If you deal with these challenges, you may be thinking that it’s not “drastic” enough for treatment, but a 2021 survey by Mederma showed that our confidence in our appearance is highly linked to the way we perceive our skin.  In fact, 58% of their participants shared that they experience social anxiety related to skin imperfections. Whether the area you are targeting is small or large, addressing it can improve your quality of life and help you feel more confident and proud of the skin you’re in.

What does it feel like to have BroadBand Light Therapy?

With its brief procedure time and minimal side effects (such as a sensation of mild sunburn), there are very few downsides to undergoing this procedure. Before your treatment, you will have a consultation with one of our experienced providers, to determine if you are a good candidate for Forever Young® BBL. To get the best results, it is best to avoid tanning, products that contain retinol or glycolic acid, and prolonged sun exposure before the day of your therapy.

During your session, your provider will apply a topical anesthetic and a cooling agent (like a gel), and you’ll be given eye protection. The provider will use the handheld device to administer the light rays, which can feel mildly uncomfortable, but not painful. Many patients describe the feeling like a very mild stinging, or a warming sensation. Once the light has been delivered to the target area and it’s complete, you will be given a skincare regimen and instructions to help the healing and recovery process. Afterward, you will be able to resume normal activities.  You can also wear makeup on the affected area, but you will need to be vigilant about sun protection for up to four weeks after the treatment.
