What is a “functional” surgery?
Functional oculoplastic surgery involves repairing areas that are causing visual impairment. For example:
- Eyelids that droop so much that your vision is restricted.
- Heavy brows that force your eyelids down into your field of vision.
Surgery to correct a functional condition may be covered by health insurance if certain measurements meet your insurance company’s specific criteria. An evaluation is the first step toward finding out if you have a functional condition and if your insurance will help pay for your surgery.

A cosmetic oculoplastic surgery focuses on improving one’s appearance. It is not billable to insurance because it is not considered medically necessary. For example:
- Lower eyelid surgery is considered a “cosmetic” surgery when the goal is to make the lids smoother by reducing puffiness, excess skin, and dark circles.
- It is unusual for medical insurance to help pay for this type of procedure.
Some patients have a medical issue they would like to address, but also want to improve their overall appearance. Combining cosmetic procedures at the same time of your functional surgery does not reduce insurance coverage for your functional surgery. Patients often tell us that combining surgeries to address both their functional and cosmetic goals is a great option because they only experience one healing period and achieve more noticeable results.
