Sun Protection for Spring Break

With the dreary winter weather, many of us are looking forward to sunnier skies and possibly even a tropical getaway for spring break! Whether you are hitting the beach with your girlfriends or simply enjoying a slower pace of life with your kids, there’s something that’s essential to consider: how you’ll protect your skin. While sun protection is something that many people remember in the summertime or at the lake, it can be less obvious in the springtime. Here are some tips for making the most of your spring break while still protecting this vital organ:

Wear protective clothing when necessary: If you’re planning to be outdoors, choose lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants from tightly-woven fabrics to help protect your skin from UV rays. This is true even if you’re planning on hiking in shaded areas or places where you think you may not be exposed. UV rays can still reach your skin indirectly, bouncing off surfaces like buildings, sand, water, and even snow. In fact, up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can penetrate clouds and fog, meaning you can still get sunburned on a cloudy day.

Choose a reputable sunscreen brand: One thing to consider when choosing a sunscreen is that it should be something that’s sustainable for you to use. Choosing one that has is easy to apply, comfortable to wear, or that you love the tint/sheen of makes it more likely that you’ll remember to apply it. Here at Renew Medical Spa, one of our popular brands is ColoreScience, which has a Sunforgettable® line. This line is one of the easiest to apply, because their Sunforgettable® SPF 50 comes in a lightweight mineral powder that you can simply brush onto your face. It self-dispenses, is water resistant, and gives you a bonus benefit of looking like a light coverage foundation. If you prefer a more traditional texture, EltaMD® sunscreens are crafted with transparent zinc oxide, and come in tinted and non-tinted varieties. Best of all, they provide fragrance and paraben-free coverage. You can shop our sun protection lines HERE, or come into our office for expert assistance from our staff.

Apply sunscreen daily, and re-apply through the day: While many people remember to apply sunscreen once, most people neglect to re-apply it as their day continues on. Most sunscreens are not meant to last all-day, especially when you are doing water activities or sweating, which can cause some sunscreen brands to wick off the skin. It’s essential to apply a minimum of SPF 30 to your all areas of your skin, like your face, neck, ears, and hands, and to re-assess your coverage every 2 hours while outdoors.

Spring break can also be a superb chance to have skin procedures you’ve been waiting to schedule. For many, this springtime break is the perfect opportunity to get your skin prepped for summer and more skin-baring outfits. We offer a number of treatments that can help you reverse the signs of aging and sun-related damage. Here a few ways you can combat the years when you were less-vigilant about sun protection:

Chemical Peels: These offer minimal downtime, and the procedure removes the outer layers of your skin and stimulates cell renewal to reveal new and healthier skin. These progressive peels are effective in treating sun damage, as well as renovating the surface of the skin to combat tone and texture issues.

Microlaser Peel: Similar to a chemical peel, a microlaser peel removes the outermost layer of skin and can be customized so that the depth of the peel matches your skincare goals. It can help treat sun spots, texture, tone, and wrinkles.

HydroPlus Microdermabrasion: You get a one-two punch with this hybrid treatment. It both cleanses and exfoliates and cleans the skin while infusing medical-grade serums into the deeper layers of the skin. It can help treat dull, dry, and environmentally-damaged skin and leave you glowing!

Whether you are wanting to make wise choices about sun protection or hoping to reverse some past damage, Renew Medical Spa can help come alongside you in the journey. We would love to help you meet your spring break goals, and you can begin your free consultation today!
