BOTOX®, Kybella and Dermal Filler: Which is Right for Me?

These days, pursuing anti-aging or cosmetic treatments is seen positively and viewed as a type of self-care. Procedures like BOTOX®, Kybella, and fillers are also more widely available and are safer than ever. These non-invasive remedies have short recovery times and offer a way to slow down signs of aging. If you are choosing which type of these treatment types (also called injectables) are right for you, we are breaking down three common ones:

What is BOTOX®?

This treatment has been used since the 1980s to treat wrinkles, deep lines on the forehead, frown lines, and furrows between the eyebrows. Botox® is made of a protein from botulinum toxin A, and is FDA-approved (USA Food & Drug Administration). Although it is a temporary treatment, results last approximately 3-4 months, and it is a practical choice for reducing signs of aging.

Who is a good candidate for BOTOX®?

While this is an effective option for almost any area where it’s approved, people considering it should know the effects are not immediate. It’s suitable for people who have realistic expectations and who have considered the timeline of their treatments. Although some patients may see positive results in 24-48 hours, the total effect sometimes takes two weeks. In addition, older patients who experience overactive bladder should not consider BOTOX®, as it can worsen their symptoms. BOTOX® is also not recommended during pregnancy.

What is Kybella?

Having excess fat under and around the chin can create feelings of insecurity. This injectable treatment targets the appearance of a double chin by using a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid to absorb fat. Kybella has minimal downtime and is performed by doing 30-50 injections into the chin area. This is done with a topical anesthetic, and patients typically see results after 12 weeks or two treatments. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes, and once the patient is happy with the results, they often do not need to return for more treatments. Kybella is the only FDA-approved treatment for the appearance of a double chin.

Who is a good candidate for Kybella?

This procedure is ideal for adults aged 18 and older who have moderate to severe fat under their chin. People who have bleeding disorders, who have had facial surgery, or who are pregnant or nursing should consider alternative treatments. In 2016, a study found that over 80% of people who had Kybella treatments experienced improved satisfaction with their appearance.

What is dermal filler?

As we age, the volume in our faces can begin to disappear. This can create hollow spaces in the face and a sunken or drooping appearance. Dermal fillers do just what their name implies: fill the spaces to create a more youthful look. Some fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in our body, and others are made of calcium hydroxyapatite which also helps stimulate natural collagen production. Depending on the type of filler used and where on the body, results from fillers can last from 6 months to an impressive 2 years. Treatments take approximately 30 minutes and have minimal downtime.

Who is a good candidate for dermal fillers?

Most adults over 22 and in good health are good candidates for dermal fillers, but they’re most appropriate for people with wrinkles. Fillers help treat volume loss and lower eyelid bags and increase the fullness of lips, cheeks, or jawline to create a more confident appearance. Dermal fillers are approved by the FDA for certain uses, but should not be used by people with bleeding disorders or specific allergies.

The FDA recommends that anyone pursuing dermal fillers or other injectable treatments work with a licensed healthcare professional to determine the risks, side effects, and benefits they can expect.
